Objective
This project centers on creating a publication and brand from the ground up, moving from concept to final outcome. The objective is to establish a strong, cohesive identity by clarifying its purpose, target audience, editorial voice, and visual language.
Magazine Identity: schor
Schor is an experimental publication that traces the crumbling edges of coastlines as protections wash away when there is a fragile meeting of land and sea, sparking awareness about retreating shorelines.
Conceptualization
I began by coming up with words that will help me visualize what schor will reflect as well as some imagery that pairs well with the concept.
• Urgent • Raw
• Reflective • Dynamic
• Fluid • Layered
• Immersive • Thought-provoking
Typefaces
Here are some typefaces I chose that I would manipulate to reflect the characteristics of the publication.
Sketching
I then began to manipulate the typefaces through sketching so that they fit my concept better.
Digital Iterations
In Illustrator, I explored different ways to modify my chosen fonts by adding or removing elements to better match my concept of eroding. The goal was to keep a consistent typographic system across the letterforms so they feel unified and cohesive while also conveying the theme of schor. I mainly played with the endings of the serifs and the stress of the letterforms.
Process
Final Wordmark
The goal of the wordmark was to make it feel vulnerable and unprotected to reflect the coasts and the communities that rely on them.
Publication Development and Iterations
The concept behind schor focuses on layering, rawness, and movement to reflect the instability of coastal erosion and its impact on vulnerable communities. This shaped my design through overlapping textures and fragmented layouts that mimic the coastline breaking down. I wanted the publication to feel dynamic and unsettled. This topic is especially important to me being from New Orleans, a place that has been deeply affected be costal erosion, I felt I could bring a personal aspect to it as well.
Final Publication
This final spread presents a scientific yet experimental look at coastal erosion, focusing on what happens when traditional protections begin to fail. It combines research and emerging technologies with personal stories to show both the environmental and human impact of disappearing coastlines. The design uses map lines as a consistent visual element, reinforcing ideas of shifting boundaries, loss, and adaptation. Overall, the spread aims to inform readers about how natural forces and human decisions shape the future of coastal communities, while highlighting the urgency of change and resilience.
